Syrian Refugees Celebrate Opening of New Shawarma Joint in PATERSON

(PATERSON, NJ) Silk City’s newest establishment specializing in shawarma is the American dream come true for three Syrian refugees who came to the United States in 2011 after fleeing their war-torn nation. Co-owner Mohammad Helal, who began saving in 2016 to open his own cafe, helped cut the ribbon at Nour Al-Sham’s opening on Main Street amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“All this was very hard for me, but everybody started helping me from the first day I arrived here,” said Helal in a report on CBS2.

At the soft opening of the restaurant this month, Helal did brisk business and actually ran out of food. CBS2 reported that the Mayor of Paterson, Andre Sayegh, who is half Syrian, gave Nour Al-Sham’s dishes a thumbs up.
